There were substantial commercial activities between Xiamen and Kinmen in Jincheng Township. Besides, so many extraordinary men, such as the wrangler general, Chen Yuan of Tang Dynasty, the grand secretariat, Zhu Xi of the southern song dynasty and Yanping junwang, Zheng Chenggong lived in Jincheng Township before. In 1680(Qing Dynasty), General Chen Long established Kinmen Military Headquarters and Wujiang Academy, and made Houpu area to be the center of military, politic and economy. The officials and gentries donate money to build the embankment, temples and historic sites. More and more merchants were doing business at Jincheng, the new downtown nowadays.
After 1945, the Mofan Street and the Southeast Asia style bazaar made the Houpu area more characteristic. Things change, stars move. Tourists love to visit these historic spots in Jincheng.
Jincheng Township is at the western Kinmen. You can see the little Kinmen and the Xiamen across the ocean. Jincheng Township is the new downtown after Ming Dynasty. In Qing Dynasty, there was the new city hall in Houpu (Jincheng). Zheng Chenggong once trained the army here. The people want to engage in trade to Southeast Asia countries all go by boat through the harbor in Jincheng. In present day, the County government was also built in Jincheng. There are a number of distinguishing historic spots everywhere.
The total area of Jincheng is about 21.7080 square kilometer. The major tourist spots are Juguang Tower, Koxinga Shrine, Ming Yi Old Street, Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Inc., Gugang Tower and so on. It’s well-known for the stunning scenery and ancient traditional South Fujian style architecture. It took so much effort to build the Zhaishan Tunnel, and it’s now available to visit.
Special festival: City God Reception Parade (April 12th of the lunar calendar) In order to celebrate the festival, people will gather to go for the parade. Everyone takes the flags, and the line is several kilometers long.
The streets of Jincheng filled with thousands of people, is bustling with noise and excitement. The custom of the City God Reception Parade has been held for 322 years and it’s the most distinctive celebration in Kinmen.
